Day 4 – 95 miles ran
Greyhound Rock -> Santa Cruz ->Aptos
Richard’s friend and SD Track Club member, Bob, joined Richard on the first 15 miles this morning. “Nice hearing someone else’s footsteps,” said Richard about Bob joining him today. Richard is very fortunate to have a great group of running buddies that will be joining him off and on throughout the route.
Richard is running through Santa Cruz in honor of Sisi: A 2 year-old, who travels from Spring Valley via Ride With Emilio to Rady Children’s for her treatments. Sisi loves to dress up in pink as a princess. Diagnosis: Neuroblastoma.
Santa Cruz -> Aptos. Second 15 miles.
Finishing in Aptos, Richard has ran about 100 miles so far. Richard said he was a little tired after the run on Day 4 but said he could run another 30 miles if he didn’t have tomorrow off. His legs are a little tight but nothing is hurt and he is still feeling good. He is constantly using a roller to roll over his legs and unleash the tightness that builds up in his legs. At the beginning of this trek, we had a photographer from the Santa Cruz Sentinel join us. A reporter and a cameraman followed us for about 5+ miles. It was pretty entertaining to watch them pop up at the turns.

Day 3 – 65 miles ran
Half Moon Bay -> Pescadero.
First run alone for Richard as he leaves Half Moon Bay. Richard is solid and feels good this morning. He relies heavily on his Hammer Nutrition bars and carries a Hammer powder shake with him as he runs. Hammer should be sponsoring him! He relies on their products! He only stops at the van once or twice to refuel with a powder shake and/or water. Its interesting that he hardly sweats! On this morning run he saw 2 dead snakes on the side of the road.
Pescadero -> Greyhound Rock.
This 15 mile stretch was flatter with only a couple hills. Richard managed to climb over them. He ran along the gorgeous Santa Cruz cliffs over looking the ocean.
This is what he had to say to his supporters in the middle of his run:
Day 2 – 35 miles ran
San Francisco -> Pacific. First 15 miles.
Richard ran through San Francisco in honor of Stephanie: An 11 year-old, who enjoys Emilio’s Snack Bags as her mom learns new skills at ENF’s Knitting & Sewing classes. Diagnosis: Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy. THANK YOU to everyone who sponsored Richard in honor of Stephanie in San Francisco.
Richard began his first 15-mile run from the San Francisco Bridge to Pacifica. He said good-bye to his wife, Diane, and other special family members and friends. A big thanks to his buddies, Steve and Noah, for running with him that day and supporting him.
Check out the video of Richard starting off in SF with Steve:
Pacifica -> Half Moon Bay. Second 15 miles.
Richard’s friend, Noah, and Noah’s cousin, Josh, ran with Richard the next 15 miles that day. Look closely and you will see that Josh ran 15 miles in cargo shorts. The wind was a major factor today but it did not blow Richard away. He had some steep hills today but there is a quiet consistently about Richard that will enables him to run for days. He is running to raise $125,000 for the Emilio Nares Foundation, which helps families whose children are battling cancer. Donate now.

Richard Runs California
Richard Nares, executive director and co-founder of the Emilio Nares Foundation, is running the California coastline to help kids with cancer. In 2000, Richard made a promise to his son, Emilio, when they saw runners outside of Emilio’s hospital room in Boston. If Emilio could be so courageous fighting cancer, then Richard could also find the strength to run the Boston Marathon for Emilio.
Shortly after that day, Emilio, lost his battle to cancer. But Richard kept his promise and continues to be inspired by Emilio who fought cancer courageously for three years. Richard has since qualified for the Boston Marathon 3 times.
On Saturday, May 4th, 2013 Richard will start an epic, record-breaking run, just north of the Golden Gate Bridge, finishing at Rady Children’s Hospital on Saturday, June 1st 2013.
Turning tragedy into hope, Richard and I, created the Emilio Nares Foundation (ENF). ENF provides programs and services for low-income families whose children are battling cancer. Our flagship program, Ride with Emilio, is a transportation service for children with cancer to access their chemotherapy, radiation, or other important medical appointments. Ride with Emilio has been nationally recognized by President Barack Obama and the US Surgeons General as a model program.
Please contact Heidi Cramer, ENF’s Development Officer at (760) 310-9467 or at enf.development@att.net with any questions and we look forward to your participation as Richard Runs California!
